ABOVE: IT IS ALL IN DELICIOUS BUTTERSCOTCH THE TASTE –
From left to right: Exsa New Variety Evaluator Reynecke Viljoen, Woolworths Specialist Buyer Letitia Joubert and Fruit Technologist Frans Gelderblom and Werner Naude of Exsa Technical Support in a row of IFG’s 228 butterscotch flavoured variety in the Hex River Valley.
This variety has been labelled as Butterscotch in this range and the red seedless grape’s unique and prominent butterscotch flavour is proving a real hit with Woolworths customers. They have been available in store for three weeks and by all accounts the punnets are flying off the shelves. The season is expected to continue for another two to three weeks. As the variety is still under evaluation the volumes are currently still limited.
Exsa supplies Woolworths and is also one of the South African licence holders of Californian Grape Breeder IFG (International Fruit Genetics). The South African evaluation vineyard block for these varieties is on one of Exsa’s production units in the Hex River Valley. In the process of establishing the supply of the IFG 228 variety representatives from Woolworths technical division visited the variety evaluation vineyard.
